There are numerous journals and magazines publishing scholarship and news about higher education in the United States, including some that focus on specific topics (such as the first-year experience, academic advising, or college student health). The short list below includes some of the publications that might be useful for EUI faculty and/or students.

Higher Ed Journals

Journal of Higher Education
Founded in 1932, the Journal of Higher Education (JHE) remains among the leading scholarly journal in the field of higher education.

Research in Higher Education
Research in Higher Education is published by the Association for Institutional Research (AIR). According to AIR, it “is directed at those concerned with the functioning of postsecondary education, including two-year and four-year colleges, universities, and graduate and professional schools. Founded in 1973, Research in Higher Educationcontains research papers that generally, but not exclusively, stress empirical studies of colleges and universities.”

Review of Higher Education
Review of Higher Education is the scholarly publication of the Association for the Study of Higher Education.

Diversity

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education
Formerly Black Issues in Higher Education, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education describes itself as “the premier news source for information” on diversity in higher education.

The Journal of Hispanic Higher Education
The Journal of Hispanic Higher Education describes itself as “a quarterly international journal devoted to the advancement of knowledge and understanding of issues at Hispanic-serving institutions.”

The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education
The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education is, according to its submissions guidelines, “an issue-oriented publication that examines the progress of African Americans in the nation's colleges and universities The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education is dedicated to the conscientious investigation of the status and prospects for African Americans in higher education.”

The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine
This bi-weekly publication is the sole news magazine focusing on Hispanic issues in higher education.

Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education
The Tribal College Journal website notes, “On behalf of tribal colleges and universities, our culture-based publication addresses subjects important to the future of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Tribal College Journal features both journalistic and scholarly articles.”

Student Development/ Affairs

NASPA Journal
NASPA Journal is the scholarly publication of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. According to its website, “TheNASPA Journal is the publication outlet for contemporary scholarship in student affairs administration, research, and practice. Manuscripts should be written for the student affairs generalist who has broad responsibility for educational leadership, policy, staff development, and management.”

Journal of College Student Development (JCSD)
JCSD is the scholarly publication of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). It describes itself as “the leading scholarly journal on the study of college students in the field of student affairs. Published six times per year and mailed to approximately 10,000 subscribers, JCSD is the largest empirical research journal in the field of student affairs and higher education.”

About Campus
Published by ACPA, this bimonthly magazine is aimed to help professionals in student affairs and higher education consider issues and practices involved with undergraduate education and student learning.

Change: The Magazine of Higher Education
Change, published six times a year by Heldref Publications with assistance from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, explores current issues and trends in higher education.

Teaching and Learning

The Journal on Excellence in College Teaching
The Journal on Excellence in College Teaching is a peer-reviewed journal directed at faculty members interested in innovative pedagogy.

College Teaching
College Teaching describes itself as “a unique, cross-disciplinary journal, focuses on how teachers can improve student learning. Each issue includes practical ideas and new strategies for successful teaching.”

Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
JOSOTL is an on-line journal “designed to encourage all instructors to engage in the discussion of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), and to become involved in the sharing of knowledge and learning about the teaching-learning process. Any report about an investigation into what works (or doesn't work) for a particular teaching-learning context will be considered for publication.”

Education Journals that include articles on Higher Ed

American Educational Research Journal (AERJ)
One of the publications of the American Educational Research Association, AERJ “publishes original empirical and theoretical studies and analyses in education. The editors seek to publish articles from a wide variety of academic disciplines and substantive fields; they are looking for clear and significant contributions to the understanding and/or improvement of educational processes and outcomes.”

Harvard Educational Review
Harvard Educational Review is a quarterly publication that describes itself as “a scholarly journal of opinion and research in education. Its mission is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussion and debate about education's most vital issues.”

Teachers College Record
Founded in 1900, Teachers College Record is published monthly and covers a variety of educational issues from multiple research perspectives.

History of Education Journals

History of Education Quarterly
This journal is the official publication of the History of Education Society, the leading scholarly association examining historical issues involving formal and informal education at all levels.

Perspectives on the History of Higher Education
Formerly the History of Higher Education Annual, this is the sole American scholarly journal devoted to the history of higher education. Published once a year, the journal includes original historical works and reviews/abstracts of recently produced pieces.

Other Useful Publications

Chronicle of Higher Education
Published weekly in print and updated daily on-line (chronicle.com), CHE has been the premier higher education news source for many years.

Inside Higher Ed
A web publication (Insidehighered.com), Inside Higher Ed has quickly become a valuable source of news and opinion.
