I have used this exercise to begin student thinking on the link between the university and its surrounding environs/"community." Typically students come to think about the fluid and complex boundaries of the university.
These are the instructions I give students for this group exercise:
Your group should choose a non-university person who works in an off-campus job- either in Champaign or Urbana- and trace the job and/or the person's effect on the University community. For example: He/she works at Meijer in the Pharmacy. Meijer is related to the University in Y way. He/she is also a member of the Boys and Girls Club that gives out an annual scholarship to the U of I. Present a visual diagram of this person's relation to the University. Take photos that reveal these connections.
